9/08: Update. Paris Shewfelt, one of Charis's students, has just won another national award for her sea otters chalk pastel painting, and has the honor of having her art hung in the Smithsonian Institution's Ocean Hall for the next few months. She was also honored with a special audience with the President as part of the ceremony. For more information see the Coastal America site and whitehouse.gov.

4/08: One of Charis's privately taught art students has just won the Wyland Foundation International "Hands Across the Oceans" Art Contest in which she was showered with many awards, a special ceremony in which she met Al Gore among other famous conservationists, and an invitation to the Olympics in Beijing this summer. Paris worked long and hard on her piece during her lessons with Charis, and has an above average attention span and patience for her age (just 7 years old!) that, along with her natural talent, allowed her to push through to finish such an amazing chalk pastel painting.
